Be sure to read the product description before ordering. Being offered is a hard cover book & workbook, at two different price points. When ordering online, I really rely on product reviews, and had I relied on previous reviews from folks that didn't look carefully at what they were ordering I wouldn't have made the purchase. Needed this for my hvac courses it really helps understand alot if you're taking hvac courses this is the book for you it goes in detail every section from the mechanical refrigeration cycle to the electricy to duct sizing to tools piping its very detailed I highly recommend the book in case theres things you miss while taking the courses it goes in great depth of detail

I bought their earlier book and learned refrigeration from and passed my test without going to school. I gave my copy to a younger guy hoping he will do the same as I did...I didn't want to be without a copy, so I bought the newer edition which has some of the newer refrigerants in it.

About the Author
Kristen Monroe is an American political scientist specializing in political psychology and the scientific study of ethics. Her work on altruism and moral choice is presented in three award-winning books: The Heart of Altruism: Perceptions of a Common Humanity (1994), The Hand of Compassion: Portraits of Moral Choice during the Holocaust (2004) and Ethics in an Age of Terror and Genocide: Identity and Moral Choice (2012). Monroe's other work explores issues of gender equality within academia, ethics and stem-cell research, the development of empirical political theory, interdisciplinary work in social science, and how people keep their humanity during war. Monroe is the author or co-editor of fifteen books and nearly 100 journal articles and book chapters. She is a past president of the International Society of Political Psychology, vice president of the American Political Science Association, and book review editor for Political Psychology. Monroe received the 2013 Nevitt Sanford Award for Professional Contributions to Psychology and was a 2012 13 Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. In 2010, the American Political Science Association gave Monroe the Ithiel De Sola Pool Award and Lectureship for outstanding work in political science and the Frank Johnson Goodnow Award for service to the profession. The University of California, Irvine, awarded Monroe the 2010 Paul H. Silverman Award for distinguished work in ethics and the 2008 Faculty Senate Award for distinguished research.

An Enlightening Presentation of War's Impact on Humanity

A Darkling Plain turned out to be one of the most thought provoking books that I have ever read. As a Viet Nam veteran, I was emotionally taken into some of the personal stories that the people in the book talked about as their experiences in their war zones. It also presented me with a number of "A HA" moments of realization that I had felt some of the same things that they described in their stories. Its very impressive that the interviewers could capture the depth of the feelings that these people experienced and also very interesting to me that there was such a linkage between them that could be analyzed and identified in their experiences. Although I have never discussed my own experiences in Viet Nam, I came to understand that both soldiers and civilians can come out of a war zone with the same types of mental trauma and struggle with memories for a very long time, and that you are not alone in your feelings. Although Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was more recently discovered as a real malady resulting from a war experience, I am sure that it has affected war zone survivors from all wars. I believe anyone who has experienced a war zone could gain new understandings about their own experiences and feelings by reading this book.

Great book for teachers!

Great book for school teachers! It teaches a specific plan of action if a dangerous person "wolf" gets into the school and shows how a class of students practices this in a school drill, like a fire drill. It prepares the children for lock down procedures such as locking the door, staying out of sight, spreading out, grabbing something to throw at the wolf while we run in a zigzag and make strange noises if he should come into the classroom. It might also be good for parents because these are ideas do seem to be useful. I wish there were more books like this out there specifically for parents to go over with their children at home.

Excellent book for kids!

While teaching children crisis response goes back 50 years for fire training, it is new in the field of active shooter and terrorism. Julia's book is a how to train manual for our times. After teaching ALICE for the past several years, the book provided a refreshing take for me and can only improve survival and coping skills in young children. My own seven year old read the book and thought it was great! Teaching things that are potentially scary in a very non-scary way for children has been a hallmark of ALICE training from the start. Julia captures the training in a perfect way for children and makes it easy to understand. This book should be required reading in every K-2 classroom in America...and not only for the kids!
