Thorough but not complete

The one thing I needed it did not cover much at all. The A/C Heater air flow control was not working. It did not cover how to trouble shoot the vacuum lines or canister. Luckily I was able to discover that the vacuum line had come loose where it connects to the top of the engine. The Haynes manual did not show this. I had to use a diagram of the vacuum system that I found at Tonkin Online Parts.

Great repair manual

I have used Hayes in the past for all my mechanic needs for my vehicles. I've already had to use it to figure out an anti-brake issue with the vehicle. I recommend Haynes repair manuals for those that are mechanically inclined and know something about auto mechanics. This is not a good repair manual for those who do not know much about mechanics.

Just bought a used Buick with some 'issues'. Seller delivered this Haynes manual in a few days. Now I got no more excuses for not working on Wifey's new old car. Already fixed the coolant light thingy and adjusted the thing-a-ma-bob do-hickey.........

Grade 5-7?Frustration, love, and sensitivity underscore the dynamics of family life for Fanny Swann, 12, the main character in this absorbing, well-crafted novel. Henkes has created strong and believable characters in Fanny; her artist father, Henry; and Ellen, her nurturing mother. Henry is having problems dealing with aging and doubts about his talents. When he goes off by himself rather than attend his own 60th birthday party, Fanny is angry and guilty at the same time, thinking that she is the cause of his behavior. While she loves and admires him, she also fears him and feels that he doesn't understand her. There has also been a rift between them since he gave away her incorrigibly rambunctious puppy months before. Despite his moodiness and unpredictable nature, a deep, strong love holds this family together. Fanny has an enviable relationship with her mother, who acts as a buffer between father and daughter. A new older and calmer dog is the catalyst for all of them to ultimately discuss their feelings, accept criticism, and try to change their behavior. In a time when dysfunctional families get center-stage in fiction for this age group, it is refreshing to find a novel that celebrates the family without being pedantic or unrealistic. What an amazing display of emotion...

I never really thought I would get into this book. I just nonchalantly picked it up off of the bookshelf in the library. I began to read it. I was pulled in by the very real display of emotion, and the dialog was also very realistic. The characters were described so well, I could almost see them. The story line was also something that actually does happen. Dogs do get taken away because of destructive habits. As I read the story, It felt like it was really winter outside, and I imagined myself sitting in front of a warm fireplace, listening to it crackle, and drinking hot chocolate. Just like Fanny. I read the whole book in less than a day. I couldn't disconnect myself from it. I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

This book talks about the life of a 12-year-old girl whose name is Fanny. Her farther is an artist and is very hard to live with. His business is not going too well and he gets upset easily, particularly when he is not satisfied with his work. Fanny has always loved dogs, one night when her dad was not able to show up for his 60-year-old birthday party he brought back a Labrador puppy. However, her dad needs concentration for his work, and when the puppy began breaking things and fooling around at the house, he sent the puppy away to someone. Fanny is heart broken and misdirected her anger, frustration, and emotional outrage. One night Fanny's father comes home with another dog named Dinner. But Fanny is afraid, she worries that Dinner would ruin her dad's concentration, and he would send her away too. Soon, her father began using Dinner as the main model in his painting. Fanny understood then, that her father would never send anything away that she loves.
I found this book touching in some ways. This book is very straightforward and easy to understand. It isn't a very exciting book, but it has good writings and is a worthy book to read. Though, I think the title doesn't exactly match the meaning of the story. For instance, "Her mouth was a pouty circle, and short, slitty lines served as eyes and eyelashes."
The sentences are short and simple to read. This book isn't very descriptive nor complex. The sentences are also short, but it makes perfect sense. "The petals were so dark they looked black at the innermost whorl." It is in a very good writing, especially in a drama type of book.
I enjoyed reading this book. It wasn't the story that interested me, but the moral of this story. Even though the story doesn't completely mean the same meaning as the title, there was a important lesson about this doll (Marie) Fanny owned. The moral of this story is not to show emotional outrage to anyone in your family. Fanny never trusted her father, and she hid her belongings away from him. I recommend this book to everyone.

A challenging vision for radically better Universities...

Lean University is a short and easy to read text that sets out Bob's vision of Lean in higher education, and is perfect for getting a flavour for how Lean works in Universities for staff right through to the most senior levels. Bob's vision of Universities is one of places where each person works, continuously and fundamentally, to deliver the best for their students.

This text is, however, not just describing a utopian dream. Bob succinctly, accurately and compellingly describes some of the barriers that prevent Universities from becoming Lean and gives practical guidance for how to counter these. His central themes are easy to understand but harder to apply, and will be difficult for some senior managers to hear; that University managers need to re-learn their craft, that teaching students has to be at the core of what we do, and that Lean ceases to be Lean when it is used at the expense of people. Bob's message is a passionate call for integrity in how we teach our students; that we must deliver what is valuable to students, in the best way possible, without accepting received wisdom.

Plethora of trapping/grappling techniques

This book does a pretty good job of presenting techniques from a clinch, or another situation where one is close enought to use Wing Chun-style trapping techniques. It also covers moving into a clinch possition, as well as several takedowns and throws from said possitions. It covers using these techniques both offensively and defensively. Also covered is basic fighting stance and footwork, some standing submissions, and some leglocks for securing a person on the ground. The book was made in 1984, so it may not be 'state of the art' where some clinching and grappling techniques are concerned, compared to what has developed in modern MMA competitions. It's a decent enough book, and for someone with no knowledge of clinching, trapping, or basic upright grappling, I think it could be helpful, and is reasonably useful for MMA competition and self-defense training, but mostly as a suplementary text.

Honestly, what are the other reviews talking about?

I bought the book because the reviews were very good but it is not. I wanted to improve my techniques and the book tought me nothing.
Larry uses the name and image of Bruce Lee to sell something that is far from Lee's philosophy. What am I talking about: mediocrity. The book even has a foreword from Linda Lee, whom I think was only trying to help his friend a bit.
Yes, the books "shows" a variety of techniques. But there is no deepness in it. In the two years that I've been practicing from an very good Wing Chun Kung Fu teacher i've learned most of the tecniques exposed in the book, but with a huge difference.
Trapping and Grappling in mostly about awareness, balance, center lines, pessure points, joint control. Larry's book says nothing about that. Here is a typical text sample of the book (page 28) "If your opponent gives you a front hand answer, you can loop his front hand and throw a back fist. If he parries that, you can lop again and punch." This is accompained by a secuance of five tiny pictures wich loosely describe the movement. Only that sometimes you don't know how the guys got from picture A to B. The pictures are too small sometimes to see what's going on, where the punch went or how the grab is done. The text is fluffy and the design bad. Not much effort was put on the making of this book.
Watching at a smiley face on a Bruce Lee Picture in the book makes me wonder, would he actually had endorsed this book at all?

A REALISTS REVIEW

after being exposed to jkd,concept and original,kenpo,judo,boxing and so many seminars/books/videos studying and practicing since i was 13 and now im 40 {just so you know this isnt someone blowing smoke up your a;; here is my review:there are some good techniques in the book.but i have to disagree for alot of the grappling though-dont take my word for it-take it for checking and try it yourself! try the tech on page 95 - catch to figure 4 arm lock to takedown.if anyone with a decent amount of handspeed throws a punch at you and doesnt leave it out there for you to grab like is shown in the book or as you see in martial arts seminars-you not going to be able to pull off this technique.its bs to say the least.even if somehow you caught the punch like is shown-then you use BOTH of your arms to put the opponant into a figure four like as shown in the book-WHATS FROM STOPPING HIM from finger jabbing you in the eyes or for that matter hitting you with the other hand?! ive asked this in seminars and the only answer they give me is they ask me to throw a punch and then they do the technique even more harder then they would for the average participant-more answers like this-ask a question that makes sense and ill just try to inflict pain on you so youll shut up! kinda answer! or with their arm that is doing the figure four elbows you to the head AFTER THE FIGURE FOUR IS APPLIED...... of course i couldve easily fingerjabbed his eyes as both of his hands were tied up in his grappling figure four movement and really he had no defence except for his grappling movement.i even had my fingers right on his eye and even was able to "air" hit him 2-3 times in the throat and to his temple before he swept me - so tell me who really would have inflicted more damage if this "teacher" had tried a technique like this in the street against someone who justs keeps an open mind and just goes for whats open?? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! another nonsense tech is thinking that a lin lop sau {cross grabbing hand }is going to work in the street or in sparring-sure it looks good in the movies and in seminars when the participant isnt really trying to REALLY punch you but to think that after you throw a straight punch and its blocked by your opponant with a pak sau{slapping hand}with his rear hand that you are going to be able to use your rear hand to grab your opponants rear blocking hand and pull him into your lead backfist is a PIPEDREAM AND A JOKE TO SAY THE LEAST! dont take my word for it !!! try it in sparring yourself! chances are when you spend time trying to grab the opponants wrist you are going to get hit with his other hand or someother strike! techniques like this are good only for one thing-to advance to the next belt! really-think about it.bs techniques like this are taught in so many styles/arts. no wonder bruce studied western boxing so much after he came to the states! alot of his wing chun just wouldnt work against someone with a decent jab/cross or just a good jab! of course there is even some stuff in western boxing that is bs that cant be used in the street like taking a punch to your gloves because in the street you have no gloves on! and also this dancing around your opponant like you saw ali or leonard do is a joke against someone who kicks you in the leg or who steps on your foot -moves quickly in ON YOU AND jams you and PUMMELS YOU! TRYING TO BE LIKE ALI OR SUGAR RAY! HA! better off that when someone blocks your punch -instead of you trying to use your other hand to grab his blocking hand wrist you just collapse that arm that was blocked at the wrist -you collapse it into an elbow into the his head and with your other hand you either do a pinning pak sau{palm slapping hand} or you use it to punch,etc.make more sense? try it for yourself ! dont believe me! try it for yourself! take it for checking! YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE TEACHER-NOT ME OR ANY OTHER ONE! teachers will show you techniques but YOU are the only one who can see if they really work! teachers are not always teaching you techniques that work -----they are teaching you techniques so that you can progress to the next level/sash/belt and not necessarily teaching you techniques that work! i encourage ALL martial artists who are responding in their reviews,respond with positive and negative -by negative i mean constructive-comments so jkd gets "cleaned" up and hopefully one day jkd,wing chun etc.other martial arts are composed of PRACTICAL REAL LIFE WORKING TECHNIQUES/TOOLS THAT WORK AND NOT JUST USED TO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT BELT/SASH OR LEVEL! TRAIN SMART,PERSISTANTLY AND HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WALK ON ! lwlwbwbw@aol.com

Best Cookbook Bar None

If you are the kind of person who loves boxed cakes with Crisco icing that's so sweet it burns your teeth, don't bother with this book. If on the other hand you actually possess working taste buds, you will find that this cookbook offers the finest selection of cake recipes in existence. Although there are some very elaborate recipes in this book, the heart and soul of it is in the basic cakes and icings. Ms. Levy has gone back and actually taken the trouble to figure out what makes cake work and has therefore been able to improve on recipes and methods. Most of the recipes in this book exchange sweetness for flavor. Therefore the chocolate cake has a deep, intense chocolate-y taste that requires a complimentary icing (or at least a glass of milk). That's the way cake is supposed to be (before they added all the preservatives and moisturizers). If anyone disliked the buttercream icing they either didn't make it right or they are out of their mind. I personally don't care for icings made with egg yolks (too rich) but the icing made with beaten egg whites is pretty much the best thing you could ever frost a cake with and (as stated in the book) flavors magnificently. Ms. Levy's raspberry sauce is better and more intense than most of the sauces I've had in the best restaurants and the same holds true for most of the other fillings.
If anyone doubts that this book is a treasure I offer the simple fact of wedding cakes. To wit, how many times have you seen people actually eat and enjoy a wedding cake? Usually most of it is left over to be thrown out (appropriately). When I have made wedding cakes using this book there has never been a crumb left and people talk about it for years afterward.
Baking is tricky, it's not like cooking where you can make adjustments to fix things. I'm quite surprised when a baking recipe works right off the bat, I expect to blow it the first time out. This book is not about following a few simple steps and cranking out a good cake. This cake is for people who love to bake, love cake and want to become a better baker and learn how to make the types of cakes that suit their palate. Properly used this book can give you the tools to create your own style of cakes that will in time become identified with you by everyone who experiences them.
The Cake Bible is one of the foundational cookbooks in my collection and by far the most often used. I agree that the binding could be better but who needs photos of plain chocolate cake? Books with pictures are for coffee tables, this book is for the kitchen. I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for baking.

About the Author
Bette Bonder, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA is Professor Emerita, School of Health Sciences and Department of Psychology, Cleveland State University. Dr. Bonder is the former Dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions at Cleveland State University. Dr. Bonder is the author of numerous papers on mental health, aging, and cultural competence, and former editor of the Occupational Therapy Journal of Research (now OTJR: Occupation, Participation, and Health). Dr. Bonder is also the coauthor of Culture in Clinical Care: Strategies for Competence (2nd ed., with Laura Martin) and a coeditor of Functional Performance in Older Adults (3rd ed.). Dr. Bonder has served on the Board of Directors of the Occupational Therapy Foundation, as well as many other community and professional boards.
