Great daily skills practice

With educational and testing standards getting more and more difficult, it is nice having a tool to provide students with practice with language arts skills. These Daily Language Practice sheets give 1st graders a daily dose of basic editing (adding capitals, basic spelling errors, punctuation). They also include a variety of other activities including sorting words, yes/no questions, rhyming words, and other fundamentals. The Friday sheet always has a different and more lighthearted activity. There is also a Daily Math Practice book and I xerox them back to back and use them as bellwork. Both are half-sheets which are completed in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended!

The books offers a review for many skills children should know. It's a usefully tool to begin class with and have children review what they know. There are questions for each day of the week for a 36 week school year. It has helped my students review concepts they have learned.

Good for kids with strong language skills, frustrating for other kids.

If your kids are naturally strong in language skills, this is probably a great review for them. My kids are not. They love math and science, but language... no. I started them out with these Daily Language Review books, and that was a mistake. These books don't actually teach any one skill. Each day has a few different activities: spelling, punctuation, grammar, whatever, with just a few questions of each. So for a kid who has strong language skills, this would be great, not too much boring repetition. My kids, however, need each skill thoroughly outlined and instructed and practiced. This book was frustrating and mind-boggling to them.

Cubicle dweller finds freedom on the Appalachian Trail

In 2003 David Miller is 41 with a wife and three young daughters. He rejects his computer programming job, and with the consent of his family, starts up the AT. Thus the title.

Near the midpoint of the story, there is a quote: "too much hard work, too much pain, too much time away from my family ..." but he continues. This is a success story. Though he does not say so, David is one of the stronger AT thru-hikers, big miles, day after day. All the usual injuries occur, but these are endured, rather than used as a reason to leave the trail. There is a community of hikers, and the sharing of intense experiences day after day is almost addictive

The reader begins to get a feel for the rituals of shelters and in trail towns. After reading the book, a potential AT hiker should feel much more comfortable with what they are going to encounter. As I read the book, I kept visualizing the AT trails vs the ones I have hiked in California and in Europe - the AT seems much more difficult, though you have more frequent opportunities to get off the trail.

The overall tone of the book is strongly positive. That's a little difficult to explain, since there is a lot about hardship, but trust me, you will understand when you read it.

I recommend this to any long distance hiker, and particularly to someone planning to walk the Appalachian Trail.

Required reading

'Awol on the Appalachian Trail' is, quite simply, a wonderful book from start to finish. I have to say that it is one of the most enjoyable, honest, and inspiring accounts that I have read in a long time. This is the best book on the AT that I have yet found.

David Miller / Awol describes his thru-hike on the trail from Georgia to Maine in vivid detail; you really do feel like you are on the trail with him, sharing the highs and lows of the challenge. The conditions of the hike, the fascinating people that he met, the personal and physical challenges, and the gorgeous scenery are all poured into the pages for the reader to soak in.

Although I have not hiked the trail myself, I imagine that this book is as close to doing it yourself as it comes. His ability to narrate the trials and tribulations without downplaying or changing the finer details was appreciated, especially for someone like myself who aspires to one day rise to the challenge of the AT.

The companion web site is fantastic, putting the book in perspective with a wide array of dazzling photos. I found myself referencing them many times as I read new sections of the book.

This book inspired me to take the challenge of hiking the AT and change my life. How many times can a book do that?

Final thoughts -- highly recommended. 5 stars.

I've read many maybe most of AT Trail books out there....

and have found this to be one of the best among them. Strong writing and accounting from all of the parts of the trail make it a great book for those armchair AT Hikers like myself. It is a nice mix of everyday life and what it takes on the trail, trail relationships (some good, some bad), and various observations on life and the trail. What makes it all that more surprising is it is a Self-Published book. It is definitely worthy of a more tangible publishing house.
I have read other books that generalize large parts of the trail and spend more time on the spiritual, philosophical part of why they are doing the trail but David Miller does not make this a predominant part of the book. Additionally I appreciated hearing about parts of the trail that most books seem to skip and it is a timely account from the year 2003.

I also recommend Mic Lowther's book, "Walking North" for another nice combination of trail accountability and philosophy. Bill Schuettes "White Blaze Fever" is good for a great "nuts and bolts" account of the trail.

In such well-named chapters as "Guarding Your Heart" and "What Matters at Fifty," Harris encourages the reader to look at one's character rather than reveling in infatuation, to regard love as a truly selfless, biblical act rather than a feeling. He refutes the concept that we are victims of "falling in love" (that it is beyond our control), saying that "God wants us to seek guidance from scriptural truth, not feeling. Smart love looks beyond personal desires and the gratification of the moment. It looks at the big picture: serving others and glorifying God." I've been disappointed by plenty of hopeful encounters that just turned into ...

I'm 23 and single. And saying I'm single is weird for me, because I have nothing to compare it to. I've never been in a relationship in any shape or form. I've done as much with boys in my whole life as I did at 4 years old (giving winks on the playground lol). And you don't say you're single at 4 years old. You just say...I am 4 years old (lol). Romance is so foreign to me but heartbreak is not. I've been disappointed by plenty of hopeful encounters that just turned into friendly or brother-sister kind of relationships. I've dreamed it all and done nothing folks. But when I found and read this book one day in New York. My mind split right open, because it felt like he had been in it. He covers it all. He didn't leave one ounce of my heart soul or mind out. I felt like being single and saved was not just this cool thing that you did at church and left at the pew on a Saturday night. It is a real, possible 24/7 thing you can do heart, mind, and soul. How many people believe this? I didn't. I was pure physically, but every other area was contaminated, And that's where Christ comes in. Kissing Dating Goodbye is not a cult folks. It is a miraculous gift that is only God given. It can't be forced upon or ritualized. It is the Holy Spirit that moves and conquers these almost impossible mountains in the age of our culture and time. Because of my renewed foundation in Christ, I am daily walking in 24/7 purity, not by my might. But God's alone. And because miracles exist, I am daily falling for an invisible man who's face I've never seen and who's heart I consistently grow to know. Who died and rose again 2,000 years before I was born. And lives in a Kingdom I've never seen yet lives in me. IF that's not a miracle. I don't know WHAT is!

Great book for relationships

My girlfriend and I have been dating for almost 4 years and we wanted to do things right before getting married and this book has really helped me to understand what a proper healthy relationship looks like.

Highly recommend. It's making our relationship stronger and more spirit-led already!

Love, love, love this book!

I first read this book 15 years ago and it truly revolutionized my ideas on dating and has given me practical ways to avoid the common pitfalls of dating. I have given it to many people over the years and without fail, anyone who took the time to read it has come back to me and thanked me over and over for giving them something that has changed how they view the whole dating scene and to have a better way of approaching it all. Truly has changed my life! Can't recommend it enough. Joshua Harris has also written a review on a book called "His Perfect Faithfulness" by Eric and Leslie Ludy, a true account of their beautiful love story based on God's principle of "courtship" as opposed to dating in moving toward a committed relationship. A beautiful, all you could hope for, love story on how it can be done and have the very best anyone could ever hope for in that. Hope this helps even one person find their own "true love story" !

Phlebotomy Essential Workbook Fourth Edition

I would not recommend this book because the book does not provide the answers to any of the questions reviewed. There is a note on the inside cover that is misleading. It reads, "Answers to all workbook activities and exercises are located in the Faculty Resource Center on the Point at [...]." This book was orderd online so I was not able to review it ahead of time. Since I was not able to access the material needed online I checked with Amazon and found out this note only refers to the instructor that is teaching the class. I purchased this book with the though in mind that it would be good material to review in order for it to help me study on my own. However, since there are no answers in the book then this book is useless to me. I believe if I was in a Phlebotomy class this book could be of great value to me. The material in this book appears to be very organized, easy reading and to the point.

I hope Amazon will update the "Look Inside" Preview because it is not fun to get a different book than you are expecting!

I received this guide yesterday, and first of all I was quite impressed the pages feel like quality paper and theres just so much information in this thing! However there a few errors one of which was a small typo which is not a big bother to me at all, and in the Bestiary there is a noticable spot of ink that blocks a few words. All in all though this is still a great guide to have!

Great book - old content somewhat

The book is awesome. Well made and the pages and ink are great. The reason for the missing star is that I had the original game and the original Prima Guide. This book is the exact same one with the DLC content added in. The text in the book even mentions content from updates and from DLC as optional even though it comes with the new special edition. I expected a re-printing of the original to some extent, I just feel like Prima dropped the ball on the editing this out to "hide" it from us. I have both my books side by side and the content is the same. I know that the game is also the same, I just wish they had removed the references to this fact.

About the Author
Benjamin Keen (PhD, Yale University) was professor Emeritus from Northern Illinois University. He was a leading scholar in the field of Latin American history, particularly the colonial period in Mexico. Although retired from active teaching for some years, Keen continued to research, write, and lecture until his death in late 2002.

Keith Haynes (PhD 1981 Northern Illinois University) is Professor of History at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he has taught Latin American and U.S. diplomatic history for more than 20 years.

I hated this book. It was a bit repetative, and i found it boring. I am not a history buff though, so I'll give it 3 stars because i'm probably going to far (i kind of want to give it 1)
