Not bad for the price.

The book is more a glossary than a handbook. The author's 70 topics are touched on very superficially with just enough of an introduction to make the reader want to learn more about them - by consulting other resources. Many of the topics in this book are covered more adequately in Nancy Tague's The Quality Toolbox, but the ones that Tague doesn't cover are nicely introduced here. There is definitely value in this book, but I think I would have sent it back if it had cost much more than it did. If you haven't had any other introduction to quality or business management tools, this could be a good start. Or, find a copy of the table of contents and do a google search to learn just as much, if not more. If you're a serious practitioner or student of the subject, pay the price for something meatier like Tague or Breyfogle.

Starred Review. Epstein, a public health specialist and molecular biologist who has worked on AIDS vaccine research, overturns many of our received notions about why AIDS is rampant in Africa and what to do about it. She charges that Western governments and philanthropists, though well-meaning, have been wholly misguided, and that Africans themselves, who understand their own cultures, often know best how to address HIV in their communities. Most significant is Epstein's discussion of concurrent sexual relations in Africa. Africans often engage in two or three long-term concurrent relationships—which proves more conducive to the spread of AIDS than Western-style promiscuity. Persuade Africans to forgo concurrency for monogamy, and the infection rate plummets, as it did in Uganda in the mid-1990s. On the other hand, ad campaigns focused on condom use helped imply falsely that only prostitutes and truck drivers get AIDS. In addition, Epstein examines what she calls the "African earthquake": social and economic upheaval that have also eased the spread of HIV. Epstein is a lucid writer, translating abstruse scientific concepts into language nonspecialists can easily grasp. Provocative, passionate and incisive, this may be the most important book on AIDS published this year—indeed, it may even save lives. (May)

Some countries in Africa report that approximately one-third of their adult populations are infected with HIV. Epstein wondered how such a state of affairs came about. Seeking answers, she contracted with a biotechnical company to go to Africa and work toward discovering an AIDS vaccine. What she subsequently learned exploded some preconceived and widely shared notions about AIDS, about how African culture all but ensures its spread, and about what might be a deceptively simple answer to the complex question of how to stem that spread. An important contribution to addressing this ongoing tragedy

I'm an American doctor working in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I can attest to the substance of much of the material presented in this book and the importance of its message, specifically that norms of sexual behavior in this culture need to be discussed and changed for prevention efforts to begin to be effective. As the author aptly discusses, numerous aid organizations, flush with good intentions and funds, seem to operate on the periphery of this central issue. One of the most disturbing lessons of my time in the midst of this horrible tragedy is the realization that the stigma attached to this disease in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa remains so severe that many people prefer to die than to find out that they have AIDS, a point the author seems to get across through with many informative anecdotes. The fundamental thesis is that we need to begin to engage the leaders within these societies at a fundamental cultural level regarding relationships and sexual behavior. No small task. I would highly recommend this book as the first read for someone trying to understand why AIDS is so unbelievably prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. As of today, for every person we enroll in antiretroviral treatment in rural KwaZulu-Natal, five will be newly infected. It's very depressing to see so many people dying from a preventable disease--1,000 people die of it every day in South Africa alone.

hiv prevention: now and how

"As a woman living with HIV," says Beatrice Were of Uganda, "I am often asked whether there will ever be a cure for HIV/AIDS, and my answer is that there is already a cure. It lies in the strength of women, families and communities who support and empower each other to break the silence around AIDS and take control of their sexual lives." With a vaccine against HIV far off in the distant future (if at all), and with treatment of AIDS in the two-thirds world difficult, expensive, and limited in effect, the name of the game in HIV-AIDS is prevention. But in places like Africa, which is the focus of Helen Epstein's book, prevention is not as simple as it sounds. As she notes in her appendix, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and other entirely preventable diseases still kill millions of people even though they can be treated for pennies.

Why has HIV-AIDS ravaged eastern and southern Africa like no place on earth? "In 2005," she writes, "roughly 40 percent of all those infected with HIV lived in just eleven countries in this region-- home to less than 3 percent of the world's population." In some of these countries the infection rates have hit 30 percent, decimating the general population, while in the west, for example, rates hover at about 1% and are generally limited to specific demographics like gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers." Theories abound about this discrepancy, but Epstein argues a narrow point, that Africa's problem is not profound promiscuity, or even the normal culprits of high risk groups like prostitutes or truck drivers, but instead a social phenomenon of "concurrent partners." That is, Africans do not have more sexual partners than in other places in the world, and nowhere near as many as gay men among whom infection rates are exponentially lower; but they do have a small number of sexual partners concurrently, at the same time, rather than one at a time or sequentially. This has set the virus loose among the general population like a runaway train.

And why has prevention been so elusive? Epstein appeals to what she calls the comprehensive "social ecology" of denial, silence, shame, adverse gender roles, and stigma about HIV-AIDS. Western-initiated and donor-funded programs will always be less successful than listening to Africans themselves and their own suggestions about how to address the problem. Uganda, of course, has been the amazing success story in this regard, and the subject of bitter debates about why. In 1989 Uganda had one of the highest infection rates in the world, but from about 1992-2002 the infection rate dropped by two-thirds. The key to the success, argues Epstein, was not in the billions of dollars from the west, but from the "collective efficacy" of a "shared calamity," by people helping each other and talking openly about the scourge. In particular, "partner reduction," she says, and not the much vaunted condom use, helped Ugandans to address the cultural phenomenon of concurrent partners. Partner reduction, as one worker described it, is thus the "neglected middle child of the ABC approach" of abstinence, fidelity ("be faithful"), and condoms. Zero Grazing, as Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni called for, is thus the silent cure already available, however valuable other prescriptions.

Epstein, a molecular biologist who has written widely on public health issues, combines rigorous science and the anecdotal evidence of substantial field research. She's clearly as comfortable with and interested in meeting with a dozen African widows under a mango tree as she is in the latest results of a demographic study. Her book has received strong reviews in the New York Times and the New York Review of Books (where her mother was a co-editor before she died), and also a rebuttal of sorts on the home page of UNAIDS that was provoked by her somewhat conspiratorial stance toward research that she argues they ignored because it didn't fit their partisan ideology.

A CLASSIC WORK

The most important book published on AIDS in a long time, and one of the most important books of the year. If you liked Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or And The Band Played On, you will love this book. It is readable, impassioned and brilliant, and despite its savage denunciation of the failures of the West to deal with the AIDS crisis, it is an essentially optimistic work. Publishers Weekly in a starred review said it will save lives, and that is not hyperbole. I urge anyone who is interested in the greatest medical crisis of our time; anyone who is interested in Africa; anyone who is outraged by the failure of the UN, the WHO and the Bush administration to deal with this tragedy, to buy this book and give it to your friends. It is the kind of book that will change peoples' minds and will move continents. It will be read for years to come...

Must have, if you really want to know her..viva Frida!

Perfect, i highly recoomend this book. I read it b years ago amd bought it here for a great price. If you love frida, you will love her diary. Studying her photos in her journal gave me alot of information and perspectivw on her spiritual amd life experiences. I found frida at the lowest point of my life, bedbound and very sick. She gave me hope while identifying her pain thru her paintings. An absolure must. I finally did my frida art piece based on her paintings and journal.
(Not 4 sale, it goes to charity. )

i love frida kahlo, but i don't think this is a good translation of her diaries.

i do not feel this is a good translation of her diaries and i also feel that a lot of artistic license was taken by the author. i honestly don't feel this should have been made so available to the general public in the form that it takes. the translation from spanish to english, is at times, poor. And, the "interpretations" of what the artist "meant" when she said or wrote certain things takes great license and assumes that the author had a microscope into the brain of kahlo. She was a complex women who was in a lot of pain towards the end and this diary reflects that, as well as how much medication she was on. i feel that it's just an all around inappropriate and inconsiderate translation of her last works.

The introduction was a beautiful glimpse into the beginning of a journey that "The Diary of Frida Kahlo" took me on. One of logic, passion, bits of pain, humor, love and the confusion of which art tries to help us cope with issues we find unbearable to ever comprehend. A daily read for me whether it be if I can only fit in a few minutes of my favorite parts of have the leisure of enjoying the whole body of the book. Love isn't a strong enough word for how much I enjoy it but will have to do, I love it a great deal. Recommend it to anyone looking to mix the beauty of images with the gorgeous mind of a poet as I find most of the journal entries of her's were.

Good...definately good...reads fast and good...

Geez...what can I say about this book? Well...I could start by saying that is was an excellent novel. Being 16 years old and all, this book really explained to me how some of the old southerners thought. They still had pride in the "old south" and it fascinated me that the old judge wanted Confederate money to be made redeemable into US dollars. I just could believe it. It portrayed racist, economic, and political issues in a very believable way. It was, all in all, emotional and it really had every emotion contained within it. At times it was funny. At times is was serious. Sometimes it was happy. Sometimes it was sad. It really gets you going once you read the first 10 pages. I liked it very much and do recommend it to everyone -- regardless of age.

In so doing, she chronicles a hidden rural revolution—before the revolution of 1952—that fused appeals for equality with demands for a radical reconfiguration of political power, landholding, and rights.

Gotkowitz combines an emphasis on national political debates and congresses with a sharply focused analysis of Indian communities and large estates in the department of Cochabamba. The fragmented nature of Cochabamba’s Indian communities and the pioneering significance of its peasant unions make it a propitious vantage point for exploring contests over competing visions of the nation, justice, and rights. Scrutinizing state authorities’ efforts to impose the law in what was considered a lawless countryside, Gotkowitz shows how, time and again, indigenous activists shrewdly exploited the ambiguous status of the state’s pro-Indian laws to press their demands for land and justice. Bolivian indigenous and social movements have captured worldwide attention during the past several years. By describing indigenous mobilization in the decades preceding the revolution of 1952, A Revolution for Our Rights illuminates a crucial chapter in the long history behind present-day struggles in Bolivia and contributes to an understanding of indigenous politics in modern Latin America more broadly.

A Radical Message for the 21st Century

Burned at the stake in Paris in 1310, Marguerite Porete might easily have been forgotten were it not for the fact that some copies of her book, "The Mirror of Simple Souls," escaped the flames intended to extirpate the written record of her heresy. Seven-hundred years later, the work remains a spiritual and poetic masterpiece, with much to say to our own age.

At a time when churches are suffering a decline in membership and financial support, when many former churchgoers are looking for non-traditional ways to satisfy their spiritual needs, when rapid change and uncertainty encourage escape through self-absorption and material gratification, Marguerite offers an alternate path, but it is not one that New Age advocates, self-realization sects, or the burgeoning ranks of enthusiastic evangelicals are likely to find congenial.

Annihilation of will and the melting into the “marrow of divine Love” is the terminus of a path described in the book. Such a soul is “scorched through mortification and burned through the ardor of the fire of charity, and her ashes are thrown into the open sea through the nothingness of will.”

Such a soul no longer needs to seek God through penitence, through sacraments, through the church, or through the practice of virtues, for it has “dissolved in Him.” Unencumbered with self, Love “nourishes and sustains those who pledge faithful loyalty to her, for she is satisfying and deep and a richly flowing sea.” Such a soul does not feel joy because she is joy itself, flowing out of the Divinity. Novices, says Marguerite, “insist that God be subject to their sacraments and their works.” In contrast, she seeks union with the Divinity.

That sounds fantastic to modern ears, but approached sympathetically, the book’s poetic spirituality will work its way into a reader’s soul, there to exercise its transforming power.

The Rumi of Christianity-Divinely Inspired

Unique amongst Christian mystical writings and I say that having read a lot of them. Cloud of unknowing to Theresa of Avilla. This book was condemned by the French Inquisition as being heretical. Just like Joan of Arc, Marguerite Porete was asked to recant. When she refused to respond to her inquisitors, she was condemned to death. On 1 June 1310 she was burned at the stake in Paris for her crime of direct knowing. She said things like ;
"Thus it is better that the Soul be in the sweet country of understanding-nothing" ... (p. 142)
"(God) is incomprehensible except by Himself". (p. 84)
"I have only as much being as (God) is able to be of Himself in me". (pp. 174-175)
Margerete Porrete is much more purely gnostic in her message which is why the Inquisition burned all of her writings. Strangely this one book survived to express in an exquisite simplicity the path to god through meditation and devotion. SHe does this brilliantly, explaining her teaching through writing a dialogue between intellectual reason (the churches way of understanding), love , and the soul. She sometimes divides the dialogue further between other parts, but the way she presents it is amazingly more lucid than many other christian mystics.
THis book is for anyone who has a serious meditation practice and combines this with thier love of God. It is not an intellectual regurgitation of a young woman trying to be a spiritual writer. She is divinely inspired by her own gnosis of what is the truth and of what is love through entering the stillness and silence of the mind. She does this through deep surrender to Christ. This love seeks to motivate others to practice more than intellectual submission, this love pours a method out onto these pages, her method to go back into absorption with GOD. This same love eventually brought her to the same sacrifices as other teachers before her. I believe the Margerite Porette was simply trying to teach others in a simple way how to experience God directly through her method. And there is clearly a method in here for those that practice meditation (a method of concentration to silence the mind-surrender the self will). Thus the book is called the Mirror of simple souls.
It is a shame that so may others who review this book reduce it to a piece of invented, intellectual literature, really throwing Marguerite's truth and method back into the ashes. A shame as she was burned for her faith in what she was writing, not for being a scholar.
If you love the Philokalia, or Rumi or Meister Eckhart; or you just simply love GOD and wish to deepen your devotional meditation practice this book is for you.

A reliable edition

This is virtually the only available Modern English edition of originally Old French 'The Mirror of Simple Souls', so it is fortunate not only that it is part of the Classics of Western Spirituality Series but also that it rises to the exceptional level of scholarly excellence that marks the rest of the series while still presenting an accessible text. Marguerite's text is challenging no matter what language, but the introduction and footnotes will answer most questions of any level. Babinsky's edition is, and will be for some time, the sole point of access to Margeurite's work by students, scholars, the devout and lay alike.
