A visual learners dream!

Huge fan of the incredibly easy series. It got me through nursing school 8 years ago and still aids me in brushing up and test prep. I'm a visual learner and the silly cartoons really help me retain the content of the section. I'm studying for my CCRN and this is a huge help. I really like the new addition and the color pages are great! Highly recommend as a quick refresh for the visual learner!

Magnificent Logic

I know of many people who still accept Snape's actions at face-value without stopping to consider why he did the things he did, said what he said, and behaved as he did. Lorrie Kim provides an interpretation of Severus Snape's actions that is precise and accurate. His actions in each book are broken down and explained with highly logical reasoning, and each chapter, just as with the series itself, builds on the previous one. This sort of precise logic that is worthy of Snape himself. It is gratifying to see that there are others who view Snape in the same or similar light as myself. While one can argue that you cannot still defend Snape's behavior when he went too far in some instances, one cannot find fault that every action had a reason. Nearly everything he did/said or let happen was carefully calculated, with the few exceptions where he lost control of himself or the situation. That being said, Kim clearly explains how he regained control or used the situation to his advantage.

It also proves that he's human and that, as readers, we have to learn to look beyond what we see through Harry Potter's eyes. When we step away from the situation and isolate ourselves away from our highly emotional response (typically the same or similar response brought on by Harry), we can see how and why Snape did as he did. That is especially important in hindsight now with the series being complete. Lorrie Kim discusses how there is always more than meets the eye with Snape, and as someone who has always read between the lines where Severus Snape is concerned, it is refreshing to know that there are others who can think and interpret and not just blindly accept JKR's words (wonderful though they may be) as they are without the desire to dig deeper for a proper understanding. Snape is a still a fascinating character and this wonderful work makes him all the more fascinating and only reinforces how much I enjoy his scenes in the books. Well worth the read, and the re-read. Any time anyone starts on their defamation of Snape, I will point them in the direction of this book and let them see for themselves how there always was more than appearances where Severus Snape is concerned.

Think about it if it wasn't for the Lily/Snape relationship, there wouldn't be the boy who lived.

Severus Snape is a great complex character. He is also very important to the Harry Potter story. Think about it if it wasn't for the Lily/Snape relationship, there wouldn't be the boy who lived. It was Snape's begging Voldemort to spare Lily and Voldy giving her the choice to step aside because of it, that result in the AK curse backfiring on him and saving Harry.

The analysis in this book pretty much lines with how I saw the character and his conflicting motivations. Is very detailed walk through from Snape's POV of the events in the books scene by scene. Any fan of this character should for sure read this book. Even haters should get it to understand him since they clearly miss the point that JKR was trying to make. The Harry Potter books are about love and redemption and Snape embodies that.

Original and Detailed Reading of a Complex Character

Severus Snape has long been my favorite character in the Harry Potter books. At the time the 6th book was released, I remember the great divide that split fans and readers of the books regarding whether Snape was good or evil. Even after the release of the final book when Snape's backstory was revealed, many remained divided on how to read Snape. Yes, he had indeed been working for Dumbledore to save Harry, but for many his treatment of Neville, Hermione and many other students in his classes was cruel and damaging. Lorrie Kim's definitive reading provides an in depth look at Snape's history and motivations to better reconcile the often contradictory aspects of this sometimes cruel, humorous, pathetic and powerful character. Her analysis is supported by extensive quotes from passages across all 7 books, extremely helpful for those whose memory of Rowling's books may not as fresh.

Excellent coverage of the basics of chart design

Stephen Few has a rare talent for explaining apparently opaque concepts in simple terms, but without simplifying the subject. This book starts from the *very* beginning and provides the reader with a solid understanding of the basics of chart design, including when to use a table vs a graph, what types of tables and graphs to use for what kinds of data, and why certain graphical features are more effective than others. Throughout, Few maintains a plain, readable writing style that is never patronizing even when spelling out seemingly obvious points (e.g., use a table if you need to look up a specific value). His patient tone and simple presentation end up guiding you through some unexpectedly sophisticated waters of design almost without your even realizing you've gone anywhere.

In addition to the design coverage, Few covers some (very) basic statisics, how to adjust for inflation, rgb values of a nice selection of colors to use in graphs, how to make box graphs in Excel, and many other workaday details that make the book immediately useful. Most of the charts in the book are made in Excel, showing that you don't need advanced design software to make attractive, clear charts.

The book itself is a beautiful large hardback. This is the source of my one complaint: its large size makes it somewhat difficult to just pop off the shelf and flip through to find something.

If you want to learn how to design good tables and graphs, get it.

My go-to resource for performance report design

Okay, I'll admit that I haven't read "Show Me The Numbers" from cover to cover, even though I've owned a copy (a signed copy!) for a few years. But it's not the kind of book that requires this to get the value from it.

My field is organisational performance measurement, and I've seen countless examples of performance reports that truly suck. They are ugly, they are cumbersome, the data is misrepresented and awkwardly displayed. It's near impossible to draw conclusions, and even more impossible to draw valid conclusions about what performance is doing, and why. How can you make wise business decisions with information fodder so poor?

So Stephen's book is a gold mine of sensible statistical basics to help us all - novices and experienced practitioners alike - to improve the way we design and use tables and graphs to highlight relationships and patterns in data like comparisons, trends and correlations.

One of my favourite parts of the book is in chapter 7, "General Design for Communication", where Stephen lays out a wonderful framework for how text can be used to assist tables and graphs to tell the story of the data. This framework is a wonderful checklist for how to design the content of a performance report that can highlight, interpret, explain and recommend responses to signals in our performance measures.

This is a great desk resource for people that are in business intelligence, data visualization or dashboard design that work with tools like excel, tableau or microstrategy. This is one of my favs - even before you buy Tufte books, get this for a practical foundation in data design. It's the textbook to the class I wish I took.

Good, but not what it calls itself

This is an interesting book, but it is not, as it calls itself, "a desktop reference of hip vintage guitar amps," unless the definition of "hip" is made so subjective as to be meaningless.

The only amps regarding which this book could be considered a reference are a handful of old Fenders---one brand, and not even all of them. In fact, it only mentions Marshall amps occasionally, and there is practically nothing about Vox, or Ampeg, or Silvertone, much less any of the less-common vintage amps. With a title like this, I expected a book that one could leaf through and learn about vintage amps. This is not that book.

But that's not to say this book doesn't have its good points. The author was an amplifier repairman and builder for many years, and he shares a lot of insights and tricks that I have not seen elsewhere. Most of the information in the book is aimed at, and of greatest use to, somebody who builds, refurbishes or repairs amplifiers, and there are a lot of hobbyists in that category (like me), and not a lot of resources available to them, so this book definitely can be an asset. But again, from the title, it is far from clear that it's for that audience.

And, while Weber was a knowledgeable amp builder, he's not really a writer, and whoever edited this book for the publisher didn't really do much of a job---it's disjointed, and while it contains a lot of good information, it's not really organized. One chunk of the book is reprints of Trainwreck newsletters, presented without any context. And almost half the book is reprinted schematics, most for amps not even mentioned elsewhere in the book. In this book, they are padding, adding heft but not much useful information.

If you build or tinker with amps as a hobby, there's probably a fair amount of information in here that you will find interesting and possibly useful. But if you leave the soldering to somebody else, this book is probably not for you. If you want a reference that will give you some basic information about hip vintage guitar amps, Pittman's "Tube Amp Book" is probably better, although it covers a lot more stuff and doesn't go into great depth. Or, if you're looking for a book that explains how amps work, Hunter's "Guitar Amplifier Handbook" would be better. But if you already have those and you're looking for more, this book might be up your alley.

Rambling but still cool

Let's face it understanding tube amps is really hard. I have a whole bunch of the McGraw Hill texts from the 1950's and really struggle with them because they are uncompromisingly mathematical and dry. The subject is so huge that you can't learn it from just one book. Gerald Weber's knowledge is broad on both the theoretical level and also the nitty gritty detail level. So be patient with him and enjoy the rambling journey towards tube enlightenment.

Disappointed and a bit misled

I bought this not realizing it was limited to 50's and 60's Fenders. True, there are a number of schematics (roughly 3/4 of the book) on many different brands but little if any discussion. I can appreciate Mr. Weber's knowledge and relatively non-technical approach but I think the title should have been narrowed down to Fender tweeds. Also it seems like a plug for his line of Kendrick amplifiers. For those interested in a wide range of vintage amplifiers, I would highly recommend Aspen Pittman's "The Tube Amp Book" instead.
